1. Tragedies
  • At the University of Nevada in Reno
    • Ryan Abele, 18, died in the fall of 2016 as part of a night where pledges “Big Brothers” are revealed and heavy drinking ensues. Abele died after falling down the stairs in the morning while still intoxicated, hitting his head on a concrete wall and going unconscious. Abele’s blood alcohol level was .3 percent, almost four times the legal limit. He died from his injuries twelve days later. (Fox News)
    • 2. Tragedies
      • At Florida A&M University
        • Drum major Robert Champion undertook the “crossing Bus C” hazing between his band members while outside an Orlando hotel. The members ran to one end of the bus while they were kicked or punched by their fellow band members. If they were to fail to get to the other side without falling down on the way, they had to restart the entire process. Champion originally left the bus to vomit, but he was forced by his bandmates to return back to do the challenge again. An hour later, he collapsed and died due to blunt trauma. His death was ruled as a homicide case according to the police and a lawsuit was filed to those who took part in the event. (www.popoptiq.com)

    • 3. Tragedies
      • At Binghampton University
        • Sorority pledges from a sorority in Binghamton said in 2012 that their sorority sisters forced them to take freezing cold showers while reciting the Greek alphabet without stopping. They also told the police that they were force-fed vomit-inducing pills as part of their initiation to the sorority. In order to prevent any mishap while taking these pills, they were made to hold hookah coals with their hands while hot. The University did close all fraternities and sororities in light of these allegations, but the system was reintroduced after a new set of guidelines were established. (www.popoptiq.com)
      Why is it wrong?
      • Alcohol is a common element in hazing which these drinking games/rituals can easily lead to alcohol poisoning and most times those who are doing the ritual are also drinking impairing their judgment as well ( USA Today)
      • For those who are opposed to hazing, you are in the right. While we can honestly empathize with your frustration and disenchantment, we can only ask you to realize that real brotherhood is truly wondrous and worth standing up for. In every chapter there are the good guys, the bad guys and the swing team. For whatever reason, the bad guys seem to always have the loudest voices and the most forceful personalities. All too often, the good people walk or are driven away and leave the chapter in the hands of what can reasonably be called the “dark side of the force.” (hazingprevention.org)

    • Four main ideas to provide you the tools to be battle ready
      • Through the Fear
      • Face your fears. Or live in fear. Marines confront theirs head on, enduring what scares them—until it doesn’t. Recruits who board our bus step into the unknown where they are given a quick introduction to fear at one of two Marine Corps Recruit Depots at Parris Island, SC or San Diego, CA. Fear of the unfamiliar is the first of many fears they must battle.
      • In the Midst of Doubt
        • Throughout recruit training, the sense of doubt that exists inside every recruit is quickly replaced with a sense of urgency. This is an important aspect of training, as when there’s no time to hesitate—there’s no time for second-guessing. Recruits must win in the midst of doubt, as this nation cannot afford to place its trust in those who doubt themselves.

    • Four main ideas to provide you the tools to be battle ready (cont)
      • Byond exhaustion
        • What you’re really made of can only be revealed at the brink of exhaustion. Marine Recruit Training will take you there. Only those who possess the never-quit spirit required of every Marine will find the strength they never knew they had, the willpower they never knew they needed, and the commitment to find that second wind even when it hurts to breathe.
      • Above the stress
        • Recruit training is not comfortable, but filled with intense stress born from profound friction. Alongside this stress will be the pressure of proving to your Drill Instructors that you are fit to continue. Those who prevail over every physical and mental battle will have developed an instinctual response—to meet heightened stress with the focus to win.
