Alumni
Here is the thing about alumni, if they are putting the time in to help the chapter, then they want to see the chapter trying to help themselves.
First, to keep them engaged – send them an update email once a year.  Have your secretary or alumni chair write it and you proof it. Make sure there are a lot of pictures. They will appreciate that. It sounds like you are doing a good job here.
Two – have a fundraiser, and use the proceeds to contribute to the house fund.  Even if you raise 500 bucks, that will show them that you guys get it and that you guys care.  That will go a long way to keeping them motivated to keep up with the capital campaign.
Three – invite them to homecoming. They don’t have to show up, and you don’t have to do a lot for them.  Just make sure they know they are invited. You will get extra points and a lot better turn-out if you let them know whatever you have will be kid-friendly.
Four – take pride in the house. Make sure the alumni know that you appreciate what you have. Why would they be motivated to give you a nicer house if you don’t take care of the one you have? That makes no sense at all…
Five – Always, always, ALWAYS be sure the alumni know how much you appreciate them. Send thank you emails and letters. Recognize those alums who go above and beyond. Be sure they are appreciated. Sometimes this is the most important responsibility of being a leader.
Your chapter is very fortunate to be in this position. Not all alumni remain engaged after graduation. Be sure you appreciate them and realize how lucky you are.
Think of something that is mandatory and fun. Work? Nope. Class? Nope. And now you are trying to make your events mandatory and lump them in with those two losers????
That is your problem and your leadership challenge.
Realize that this is a difficult problem to grasp for people like you and me. We love our fraternity or sorority and do not understand why others don’t feel the same way. It frustrates us. The sooner we realize that everyone is looking for something different out of our organizations, the better equipped we’ll be to solve this problem.
Fortunately, the solution is actually very simple. Have events that your membership wants to attend and is looking forward to having. After all, it is much easier to get people to show up that way than to try to force them to attend events they don’t want to be at.
So how do you do that?
First, you must realize that as a leader your job is to serve your membership. You need to find out what they want out of the organization. Then, you need to provide they type of programs and events that they want.
Second, you need to program smarter. College students have a hundred different commitments on their time. By turning fraternity or sorority into another commitment you will be turning off your members. Plan fewer, but better, events to accomplish this.
Third, eliminate the events your membership dreads.  If you are getting poor attendance, then it isn’t worth the chapter’s time and energy.  Don’t waste type trying to make a loser work. Your time is too precious. Spend that time on events that your membership wants.
Finally, you need to get your members to have ownership in your programming. If every event is planned by the leadership team, it won’t take long before the membership becomes disinterested. Make it a point to have different brothers or sisters assume the leadership role for the success of different events. By delegating this responsibility, you are developing future leaders while creating a group of individuals that will be highly motivated to making the event a success.

MAIN IDEAS:

  • Leadership
  • Inactives
  • Involvement
  • Steven Diaz De Rivera: MVP 2014-2015
As MVP, you are the devil's advocate. People will not like you hahaha
But you have to be brave enough to set goals, build plans to achieve them, and stick to them even when the criticism gets loud
Focus on one key thing as MVP: building as much quality into the chapter as possible with minimal cost and time spent by brothers
How can I get brothers to improve as individuals and citizens but without taking up too much of their time, energy, or money?
That's the question you'll always need to ponder, and to find the best answers to
My interpretation was to focus on leadership development and to minimize the activities that attracted fuckboys or the unmotivated to join APO
What were things you did to focus on leadership development ?
    Steven Diaz de Rivera
    Steven
In doing that, we added value to people's lives, but would also solve the membership retention issue along with the lack of leadership in the chapter
To focus on leadership development, I changed the questions on the active quiz to include more leadership development questions and less fraternity history; I reasoned that knowing fraternity history did nothing for us as leaders
    Aaron
    What are leadership questions ?
    Steven Diaz de Rivera
    Steven
I also increased the passing score. That way, guessers and those who used non-leadership questions to get by on the quizzes wouldn't be able to pass; only those who studied the leadership questions and knew them would have the best chance at passing
Like questions more about the leadership development programs
I used the quizzes as advertising pitches for LEADS, membership academy, etc
    Aaron
So like what is each program ?
    Steven Diaz de Rivera
    Steven
LEADS and membership academy are the largest that nationals funds
I don't remember all of them off the top of my head
    Amber Robinson: MVP 2015-2016
Well, comittees worked but only if rose or myself pushed them along, a strong strong relationship with fundraiser (ppl lile free stuff and doin things 4 free) but its never really free we pay for it with money we worked for. Games were big but if Im honest try to have someone in the committe really be incharge of keeping the big games together its almost like taking on a second position, try to make gbm fun and efficient introduce new ideas and always try to out do whatever the best thing from the past was
    Amber Robinson
    Amber
If u reach for the stars and fail at least you will be among the clouds
    Aaron
Thank you so much for all your advice
    Amber Robinson
    Amber
For sure lol if Im honest its all about knowing when to ask and when 2 just do, males sure u know what u want to achieve set a real goal like chapter retreat or something then spend ur term reaching it, everything else will fall into place it will prevent u from wondering around like a chicken with ur head cut off lol

I dropped Academic chair because i was told that in order of having an apprenticeship with the treasurer, the position would need to be dropped. Treasurer apprenticeship would ideally help me become a better treasurer. However, upon further examination, I found that my talents would be better in the role of Membership Vice President and that I can create more ideas for Membership versus Treasurer.
